crowd-funding? yes, it actually fucking works. really well.

holy shit, my friends.
not only did we reach the goal of $3,300 that we set on tristan’s kickstarter, we’re currently made MORE THAN DOUBLE.
i’m so deleriously impressed, tristan is over the moon, and it feels like the world is bursting open with possibility.
to everyone who gave, THANK YOU. we’re currently at over $7,000 (though this fancy widget will tell you exactly how much over.) FEAST UPON IT:
to everyone who gave: you’ve basically all just become santa claus to an insanely talented young musician.
today tristan came over & we worked on our piano duet and he practiced his songs in my bedroom while i caught up on email in the kitchen.
it felt like heaven to listen to him banging in there. the kid is SICK.
here’s a little video i posted to twitter….(yes my place is a fucking clutter kingdom. do not send cleaners.)
we hit the studio tomorrow at 1pm and are bringing with us some friends and family and folks who donate $100 or more and…you? (we have a few extra spaces so if you’re in cambridge/boston and can 100% go to a 7PMish event, HERE is some more info on how)
after we finished, we met up with his parents, who are absolutely incredible people well-versed in theater and art – for god’s sake his mother studied BUTOH WITH KAZUO ONO, the founder – and his dad was involved with Bread & Puppet, my old political theater puppet ninja heros. we all headed to “Alice Vs Wonderland”, the mainstage theater piece at the ART – a crazy mash-up of the original story and ROCK ROCK ROCK. then we all went out to eat with the director (& hungarian filmmaker) Janos Szasz, who i’m absolutely in art-love with. more on him later, i hope.
we talked about, well, everything….and as i sat talking with tristan and his father, watching janos laughing and toasting with tristan’s mother about art, difficulty and life….
i looked around the table at us and i thought – this is why i do this. any of this. this kind of joy. a surrogate art-family, if only for a meal.
may there be thousands more.
and may you find yours tonight

if i get through brain surgery in three weeks and i am able to make art and get out again, i hope i have moments like that and can say, “this, this is what makes it worth having lived through the long years of suffering hell. there was joy at the end of the tunnel”. even if it’s hard and joy is mixed with pain, i long for a life full of that again. you are blessed, amanda fucking palmer. thanks for sprinkling some of it over here.

    • queltikat

i’ve been hanging on to this. surgery is in a couple of days.

I also want an art family, but not the snotty kind – which seems to be all i find mostly. The funny thing about these snotty artist are that none of them have ‘achieved’ anything, but the artists who have ‘achieved’ seem to be so doooooown to earth and modest, because they know….

Wow! That is a good reason to do this good thing. I hope it works out super well.
queltikat, I hope your surgery also works out super well and your art flows fast and deep afterwards.

Aww, he’s playing “Rue des Cascades”. It’s one of my favorite Tiersen compositions.
This kid is amazing. It feels great to be a part of this project (even if I can only help a little).

I was introduced to you by my now ex girlfriend a few months ago, even though I was vaguely familiar with your music from some of your past projects. I picked up your latest album and have enjoyed a new take on some classic Radiohead tunes. I watched your twitvid with Tristan and mysteriously found myself wishing for more of his music. I have always been into more intense music for most of the past 15 or 20 years, but there is just something soothing about how he plays. I’m not exactly sure how to describe it, but it just connects with a part of me that is seldomly reached. I wish you both the best of luck in the studio tomorrow, or today as the case may be, and I like many who follow you are looking forward to the end results!

  • Her

The song Tristian played is Rue des Cascades by Yann Tiersen right?
I like this version very much also!!!!
His hands fly and glide over the piano keys!

  • RiverVox

“And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make.” I’m sure there’s a Buddhist line about this but all I got is Beatles.
You make connections and families everywhere you go and it sustains and enriches everything you do and the lives of all that you touch. NAMASTE.

Yes do not send in the cleaners, i love the clutter <3

  • Fairbetty

That is so amazing awesomely fabulous. Tristan, your wildest dream has just come true… and Amanda, you ROCK for taking the time to make it happen. Can’t wait to hear his record!

You know, now I don’t feel so bad about the state of my apartment at the moment… :p

In all seriousness, bless you Amanda for giving this amazing kid the chance to fulfill a dream.
Happy to have a played a small part in it. :)

How inspiring! Arts as a community is such a powerful and beautiful thing. Its why I’m at an art school VS a fashion school, why I live in LA, and its what keeps me inspired and creating work.

We are all on a journey from the house we were born into to the home we make for ourselves – Frank Warren, founder of PostSecret. The only thing is, we tend to make new separate homes and families. Like cells clustering together to form, say, a leg or a head or a liver or an earlobe or a fingertip. Once we start connecting AAALLL the different bodyparts together is when we will have… one love, one world, one family. It’s what I believe in, and these are the times to make it happen, every day, any day. More than we know.

  • HaleyHanabusa

A tight-knit community? Yes. A damn good reason to be? Absolutely.

Good luck Tristan! You’re amazingly talented and you deserve every bit of support you’re getting. (I haven’t been this excited for a piano CD since FFX Piano Collections.)

And cheers, Amanda. You’re inspiring and you know it and you love it and we’re glad. <3

  • Easternhou

I feel better about what my place looks like…love you AP!

  • Mrblooz

A piano in your bedroom. I’m jealous.

Good luck to you and your protegé. he is remarkable.
    and Amanda, you are remarkable.

  • Balive2LOVE

You should have a yard sale–you’d be surprised at the money you could make. oh and when my daughter moves out and i am no longer legally resposible for her–can i go on tour with you !? I will bring my tax return money and 501K — K !?

  • Bexareboy91

I don’t understand why you say “both albums”. Don’t the Dolls have four? Anyway, I’m glad you guys are going to play in your hometown. In the meantime, I happily await your show in Austin for which my friends and I have already picked up a batch of tickets.

    Peace, love, and punk cabaret!

Just had to say, “Thank you.” as I read your piece on crowdsourcing and told my husband who is a freelance editorial assistant and pop culture blogger (Booksteve’s Library, hey, must plug the hubby.). A couple of months ago, his computer died and without that he had no means of working. We crowdfunded his computer in two weeks. He’s back to work thanks to you and his wonderful, giving readers.

Thank you so much. If you are ever in the northern Kentucky/Cincinnati area and need a place to crash, our couch is yours.
